The stench of his own cooking meat would have sickened him, but the sharper tang of Kaelen's blood, still wet on the rough-hewn platform, drowned it. His foster father's headless body lay inches away—a final, brutal lesson in the Holy See's mercy.

Leon had watched the sword fall, heard the wet thud of Kaelen's head in the basket, and something in him had cracked so deep he thought the fire would be a relief. The crowd pressed forward, a sea of twisted faces, mouths open in hymns that felt like curses.

Bishop Aldred stood on his balcony of the cathedral, white robes pristine, his smile thin and satisfied. He raised a hand in benediction as if the execution were a holy rite.

Leon's vision tunneled. Rage, pure and ancient, ignited in his chest—not from the pyre's flames, but from a place deeper than bone, a furnace that had slept for a thousand years.

Then the godblood woke. It came as a tide of molten gold in his veins, a shattering, glorious agony that bowed his spine and tore a scream from his throat—not of pain, but of rebirth.

The holy chains, etched with suppression runes, burst apart in a spray of glowing shrapnel that cut down two executioners where they stood. The others staggered, dropping their torches as the world inverted.

High on the cathedral's spire, the great iron cross groaned and twisted, rotating upside down with a shriek of tortured metal. Stained-glass windows blew inward, showering the faithful with holy shards.

A pressure wave knocked the front row of onlookers off their feet, and the fountain in the center of the square erupted, its water momentarily crimson before running clear. A woman shrieked, 'Demon!' and the bishop lurched backward, his smile a rictus of disbelief.

A pillar of white-gold flame erupted from Leon's body, harmless to his own flesh but searing the air to a shimmer. He rose, lifted by the force, suspended for a heartbeat above the dying pyre.

His eyes, now orbs of liquid sun, met those of the three remaining executioners. They barely had time to recoil before fire consumed them—not the slow, mortal flame of the stake, but instantaneous immolation, their bodies etched in negative for a blinding instant before crumbling to cinders.

A collective moan rose from the crowd as the smell of ozone and myrrh rolled over them, a scent of judgment. The crowd's roar mutated into a wail of terror.

They trampled one another, the pious now a stampede of panicked beasts. Ashes swirled in the sudden silence that followed, then the screaming began in earnest—a cacophony of prayers and curses as the crowd clawed at one another.

The bishop, face ashen, stumbled back through the shattered windows of his balcony, robes tangling. Leon's gaze followed him, but he did not pursue.

Leon's feet touched the scorched stone. Every breath tasted of ash and justice.

He faced the scattering multitude and spoke. His voice was not his own—it resonated with the weight of forgotten ages, a crack of thunder: 'You watched my father die.

You cheered. Now watch as I tear down the lie you kneel to.' Flames licked from the corners of his eyes, but he didn't blink.

'The Holy See has fed your children to a thing beneath their altars. I am the reckoning born of that blood.

I will not rest until every bishop, every inquisitor, every soul complicit in this murder is dust.' The words seemed to hang in the air, and for a moment, even the frightened crowd stopped to gape. He turned toward the cathedral, its inverted cross still trembling against a sky stained by smoke.

A single tear carved a track through the ash on his cheek. 'For you, Kaelen,' he whispered, 'I will become what they fear most.' Then he walked, barefoot and unarmed, through the wreckage of the square.

The crowd parted like water before a prow, mothers clutching children, men dropping their rosaries. No one met his eyes.

The bells tolled a discordant, clanging peal, as if the church itself trembled. Leon did not look back; his path was set.

The sewers' entrance lay beneath the old butcher's shop, a route Kaelen had forced him to memorize, calling it the coward's way out with a bitter smile. Now it was his only road.

But before he could slip into the alley, a flicker of movement caught his eye. A girl, no older than fourteen, crouched in the shadows between two overturned carts.

Her clothes were rags, her face smudged with soot, but a birthmark on her wrist glowed like a captured star, pulsing in rhythm with the dying flames. Her yellow eyes were wide, not with fear but with terrible hope.

She met his gaze, and Leon felt the godblood stir again, recognizing kin—an ancient bond older than the church, older than the Devourer. The first ally in a war not yet begun.
